‘What’s the same, what’s different?’ is a key question in helping children develop an understanding of mathematics and make discoveries for themselves. At the first annual Nottinghamshire Numeracy Conference, we will be exploring this question on two levels. Firstly, between mastery and ‘traditional’ teaching approaches and secondly between primary and the Early Years.
If we learnt anything from this year’s SATs papers it is that we are being encouraged to, and rewarded for, getting children to think about and understand maths, rather than to just ‘do it’. Our first keynote, Anne Watson will guide us on a journey through variation, and
how lessons and tasks can be designed to nurture thinking, discovery and deep understanding.
Also, we will be exploring mastery in the Early Years; looking at how we can develop great mathematical thinkers from the moment children first step foot in our schools. To guide us on this journey, we are exceptionally excited to welcome our second keynote, Sue Gifford.
Each keynote will be followed by a round of workshops, delivered by specialists from across the region. The idea behind the conference is to bring maths leads and early year leads together, to develop a greater level of connectivity within schools. If you don’t have an early years setting, fear not, there will be plenty to keep you engaged across the day.
