Horsendale Primary School in Nuthall has received the news that it is to become the only English Hub in Nottinghamshire, and one of only 32 schools to be awarded that status in the country.

Horsendale Primary School named as the only English Hub in Nottinghamshire

English Hub status is only awarded to schools that have consistently achieved, and maintained, the highest standards in the teaching of early language and reading. After undergoing a robust and competitive process to find the 32 highest performers countrywide, those named by the government will now support schools to deliver excellent early language and phonics teaching in Reception and Key Stage 1.

The centre of excellence is to be called the ‘Flying High English Hub’ and will begin its work in September 2019.

Horsendale Primary School Head Teacher, Karen Jagger, said her staff were thrilled at the news. "All of us at Horsendale Primary School are proud to be a part of the new Flying High English Hub. This presents an exciting opportunity for our school and for out multi-academy trust, The Flying High Partnership.”

Paul Goodman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the Flying High Partnership said that the team at Horsendale Primary School deserved to be awarded this title. "To be an English Hub not only takes a lot of dedication and work; but is evidence that those difficult to reach high standards are actually the norm for the school chosen. Horsendale display the highest quality of teaching in reading, language and phonics, and now those skills can be used to help other schools to reach those same goals. There is a lot of work ahead of us to achieve that, but it is a challenge we relish, and the team are more than capable of achieving its aims. This is great news for children around Nottinghamshire and further afield as they are the ones who will ultimately benefit from this opportunity.”

Councillor Philip Owen is Chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council and says he welcomes the good news. "This is fantastic news and both the Flying High Partnership and Horsendale Primary School are to be congratulated on this success.  This English Hub will be of great benefit to the development of language and writing skills for Nottinghamshire young people and will undoubtedly benefit them greatly as they progress through their academic lives.”

Mr Chris Wheatley is CEO of the Flying High Partnership, the multi-academy trust of which Horsendale Primary School is a member. He said, "As a Trust we are delighted to have been designated to be an English Hub by the government. This is so significant for our organisation, the area of Nottinghamshire and most importantly the children of the region. To be recognised as one of the highest performing Trusts in reading across the country is testament to a lot of hard work from all in the Flying High family, with special congratulations to Karen Jagger and her team at Horsendale Primary School for leading the way with outstanding teaching of reading.”
