Children’s monthly visits to care home spreads kindness in the community

Children from Hucknall Flying High Academy selected to be a part of the school’s new Kindness Crew have been working together to spread kindness within their local Hucknall community.

Their first project, in partnership with Harrier House Care Home on Hurricane Road, Hucknall, will involve children visiting once a month to spend time with residents through activities such as reading, singing, and craft sessions.

Karl Clowery is Headteacher at Hucknall Flying High Academy, and he said the Kindness Crew’s first visit celebrated the Year of Reading, and children shared stories with residents, proudly demonstrating their reading skills.

Karl said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to visit and get to know the residents of Harrier House Care Home. Our children’s project to spread kindness has already had a

wonderfully positive and heart‑warming start, with children visiting to read and share their favourite stories.

“The children have loved every minute reading aloud and getting to know their new friends, and in return, the residents have shared stories from their own lives, creating a lovely exchange between generations, breaking down age stereotypes and strengthening generational friendships.

“We hope that through these visits we will bring new companionship, joy, and a sense of connection for all; giving the children a meaningful experience they will remember. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to building even more moments of kindness together.”

Pupil Amelia is in Foundation Stage 2 and said, “The residents were fun, this was the best trip ever!” Fellow pupil Thomas, Year 4, also took part and said, “I really enjoyed reading with them and can’t wait to go back with my friend to do baking.”

Betsan Dempsey is Family Support Worker/ELSA at Hucknall Flying High Academy and coordinates the children’s visits.

Betsan said, “It’s been an absolute pleasure to take the children to Harrier House, everybody gets so much out of the experience. Emma Cass, who is Activities Lead at Harrier House has been fantastic, and we have been made to feel so welcome. We can’t wait to go back.”

Over the coming year, all classes at Hucknall Flying High Academy will visit Harrier House Care Home, spending meaningful time with older adults, and strengthening the bond between generations in the Hucknall community.
