Callum Hudson-Odoi brings important lessons about respect and inclusion to life during a special visit.
Pupils at Porchester Junior School enjoyed a school day they will never forget when Nottingham Forest star Callum Hudson-Odoi surprised them during a special filmed session for the No Room for Racism campaign. The Premier League footballer visited the school in Carlton to meet pupils and take part in a classroom session exploring equality, diversity, respect and inclusion. Children had the opportunity to interview Callum, ask their own questions and hear about his experiences, helping to bring the important topics they had been exploring in the classroom to life.
Headteacher Vicki Welsby said:
“I could not have been prouder of our children during Callum Hudson-Odoi’s visit. Respect is one of our core school values, and equality and diversity are central to our curriculum, so hearing Callum speak about his own experiences brought these important messages to life in a meaningful and memorable way. “Our children asked thoughtful questions, shared their views with confidence and were an absolute credit to our school.”
A dream come true for Oliver!
The day became even more memorable for Year 3 pupil and devoted Nottingham Forest supporter Oliver Shaw. Oliver had no idea Callum was visiting until the Forest star walked into his classroom to surprise him. Callum presented Oliver with a signed shirt before going one step further and FaceTiming Nottingham Forest player Igor Jesus, giving Oliver the opportunity to speak to one of his footballing heroes.
Oliver said:
“I was super excited because they are great Nottingham Forest players. It was the best surprise ever. Now I have a signed shirt, and I can’t believe I also got to speak to Igor Jesus too. I will remember this forever!”
Oliver has also been invited to Nottingham Forest’s match against Manchester City, where he will have the opportunity to meet Igor and other players.
For pupils across the school, the visit was about much more than meeting a Premier League footballer. Year 6 pupils spoke about how the experience encouraged them to think about racism, respect, confidence and making the right choices, while creating memories they will carry with them long after leaving the classroom. At Flying High Partnership, we want our schools to be places where children are inspired to aim high, broaden their horizons and experience opportunities that help shape their futures. Porchester Junior School’s special day was a fantastic example of learning coming to life and showing children what is possible.
